This is where N64 is a lot stronger than PS1. One strength of PS1 (at the time of release) was that PS1 had a solid selection of FPS games, RPGs and lots of platformers. The at the time, I feel that the quality of the games on average were higher than your usual N64 game. But while a lot of those games were groundbreaking at the time, few of them still stand up. Off the top of my head, Resident Evil and Metal Gear are simply bad games. The controls are bad and the camera angles are laughably bad in both of them. Metal Gear has the added bonus of having too many stupid fucking characters and a plot that gets more convoluted, more idiotic and more full of bullshit extravagant characters as the series continues. I think the order of quality/importance goes Escape from New York > Escape from LA > Metal Gear (Laughably bad NES version) > Metal Gear Solid (the rest of the entire series). The first person shooters like Syphon Filter or Medal of Honor were great at the time; upon revisiting, you will find the controls way more awkward than Perfect Dark/Goldeneye (even with the trash trident that is the n64 controller) and who the fuck wants to play non coop multiplayer with only 2 people. PS1 had a lot of those contemporary style racing game franchises that just keep pumping more titles out, and just like most serious sport franchises which were a dime a dozen both on N64 and PS1 they almost never stand the test of time (exceptions being games with ridiculous mechanics like Blitz or NBA hangtime). In the auto genre, Twisted Metal was really awesome, but again, with only 2 players head to head (and thankfully coop) there is only so much fun to be had upon revisitation. PS1 did have a lot of good fighting games that N64 lacked. N64 classic multiplayer games weathered the test of time more favorably than PS1 and are more enjoyable when having people over. People are always down to play some Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Starfox, Smash or Mario Kart. Games like Mario Kart 64, Mario Party and to an extent Smash Bros have a low barrier to entry and having 4 players able to participate makes it a lot of fun, even to people who haven't played before. Personally I didn't really give a shit about any Zelda titles on the N64 or Mario 64, but I did play the shit out of Rogue Squadron and Shadows of the Empire (which are still sick as fuck). I feel that as far as multiplayer games, N64 had a lot of really stellar titles that still stand the test of time, where as PS1 titles really fall short on that. Edit: Maybe people hated the N64 because they didn't have many friends to enjoy the strongpoint of the console. |

Depends on what your friends played, really. This is going to come down to demographics, but from my life experiences, it's what stood out to me: When I was growing up, I was from the only middle-class family in an otherwise pretty poor neighborhood. My friends rarely had consoles of their own, and a few of them didn't get their first computers until the mid-2000s. Despite the fact none of them had their own consoles, everyone spent a lot of time at the local arcades. Because of this, everyone was familiar with arcade staples, and as such, fighting games, racing games, and sports games were pretty much the only thing people would play-- especially fighting games. Street Fighter, Tekken, and Soul Blade being the staples. I knew of only one other person who had an N64 in the local area, and the only game they had for the system was Wave Race 64. People in my area just didn't seem to have any interest in Goldeneye, and Mario Kart was (unfairly) looked down on for being "kiddy shit". I guess it was a harder crowd, and the presentation of N64 games and less familiar genres turned them off. Didn't help that N64 games cost a ton compared to PS1 games, especially second-hand. It wasn't until I got to college and was around kids from middle to upper class families that I met a lot of people who had the exact opposite experience: They'd rarely been to the arcade let alone grew up in them, had never played real fighting games like Street Fighter, universally reviled sports and racing games, and whose gaming experiences almost exclusively revolved around Nintendo consoles and franchises like Smash, Mario Kart, Mario Party, etc. |

This is a really interesting way to look at it. I myself fit into the category of people that you described as upper middle class and only really being able to hit the arcades on special occasions (The arcade by my house is the one with half of the games broken and the used restaurant meat slicer as the top prize). Like your experiences, I never really played nor play fighting games. I just get my ass kicked because I don't know the combos or any of the mechanics. Something I forgot to add was that people also really appreciated and abused the fact that you could copy PS1 games if you had a gameshark, which is still handy to this day. Also:

mario kart 64 is my favorite but that doesn't really even count because everyone's favorite mario kart is the one they played the most. |

Fwiw, I probably put equal amounts of time into SNES MK, MK64 and MK DD and MK64 is my favorite. But yeah, all the other ones are terrible because I haven't played them. |
