So for my birthday/wedding anniversary (they're on the same day), my wife got me this controller.
NES30 Pro

It's basically a rounded off NES controller with SNES face buttons, dual analog sticks and four trigger buttons lined up together. It works surprisingly well when you're emulating, but I wanted to try it for other games. Another reason I wanted it is because I plan to tweak my Ouya into a MAME emulation box, and wanted a better controller than the piece of shit Ouya one.

I ended up getting a nice chunk of cheapo games from the summer Steam sale, mostly thanks to some friends. Because I injured the fuck out of my right hand, playing most games is kind of hard, but thankfully one of the games I got was the Ys Chronicles compilation. I spent about 6 hours playing the hell out of Ys 1 on Sunday, mostly because with this controller you can pretty much play it one-handed. I have the Sega Master System port of Ys as well as Ys Books 1 & 2 on TurboGrafx CD (which basically compresses both of them into one seamless game), and this new one is about on par with the Turbo/PCE version. Better graphics and music, but no voice acting (the one thing the American Turbo version actually didn't fuck up) and due to the level capping at 10, a bit harder.

Anyone like Ys, or is the "bump" style of combat enough to give you horrible Hydlide flashbacks?

Ys 3 was really good. A lot of the diehard Ys-weebs don't like it for the same reasons people bitch about Zelda II; they changed the genre to side-scrolling rather than overhead "bump combat". Falcom ended up rebooting Ys 3 as Ys: The Oath in Felghana. Same story, but an overhead game. I haven't played it yet, so I can't say if I prefer it, but Ys 3 was perfectly fine. PRETTY sure I still have the SNES cart (I know I have the Turbo CD version around here somewhere.)

Oath in Felghana is really really good. I had a jaw surgery a few years ago and only had a PSP to do anything with, beat the whole game great time. It's a little expensive on Steam but worth the trouble.

I think it was fairly discounted during the Steam summer sale, but I already had WAY too much on my plate at the moment so I skipped it. It's on my wishlist though.

I never got into Y's at any point back in the day. I have some of them now - Ys III on the SNES, a random selection of the PSP releases but the only one I played was Ys I/Ys II on the DS and I have to say I wasn't really impressed.

That controller looks pretty cool though. I need to invest in a Steam appropriate controller at some point because I bought a Steam Link when Amazon matched the Steam Sale price. Maybe that'll be it.

if you ever can scoop it for under $10 and have the time to sink in, you will not be disappointed.

The first two Ys, and for that matter Ys 4, are hard to get into these days because they stuck with the "bump combat" system for so long. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty fun. The learning curve isn't bad, but the difficulty really yo-yos. Like, seriously. Regular mobs can potentially fuck your shit up, but once you get to a boss, they go down in two hits. And I'm playing on Hard mode.

Port, you might like Ys Origins. It's more Zelda-like (overhead, no "bump" combat, an actual button to swing your weapon and jump.) Someone gifted that to me, but only played it long enough to test out the controller. I'm probably going to really pick that up once I'm done with Ys 2.

Once my work/gaming backlog has laxed up, I'll keep my eyes peeled on Oath. Kind of wish Falcom would get off their asses and throw Brandish on Steam, because I don't have a fucking PSP. Guess I could emulate it, PPSSPP runs like a dream on my laptop, I'd rather just, you know, support poor old Falcom.

I want to get an 8bitdo bluetooth controller for use with my Retron5. They are compatible right out of the box now.

Well that's good, because I cannot get the fucking firmware updated on it for the life of me. I haven't even paired it up with my Ouya yet (haven't touched it in over a year.) I've just been using it corded to my laptop.

I have a 1st Gen iPad that I could probably jailbreak to run emulators on, but it seems really pointless unless I'm traveling without my laptop. Don't really do much gaming on the go these days.

I am sure I am literally the only one on earth who wants the Ouya to say OHHHYEA when you turn it on, like it's Kool Aid Man or something.

I liked Ys V the most. It does not have too many fans, because it got released very late in the SNES life span, and nearly killed off the series. Aeon Genesis did a translation patch after many years put into work, now any one can read the plot!

I love the vibe of YS I-III. That was peak RPG for me and really why I will never play any modern ones. Great music, simplistic and addicting. It's funny though, I beat YS I on turbo through virtual console, made it about two hours into Ys II and quit for some reason, then got really hooked on Ys III, beat it for both genesis and the Oath in Felghana Steam release. Mother fuck that last boss though. Must have taken me a legitimate 50 tries to beat him.
