It's the one genre where you're guaranteed that pretty much every male from ages 5 to 45 is probably going to want to own and play. Game companies are rolling the dice with a platformer, a puzzler, or a shoot-em-up, but most American men and boys are into sports and will habitually buy them. Therefore millions of copies sold. There are people who go out every year and buy the latest Madden or NHL because it's the one game they buy. Hell, people used to buy the SNES and Genesis just to play those two games for a while there in the 90s. That's pretty much where EA made all their money. I love that sports games are cheap on Genesis, because I buy tons of copies of Joe Montana 2 Sports Talk Football and Tommy Lasorda Baseball and they're easy to repro into whatever game I want. |

As I've gotten older I've found myself enjoying older sports games that don't feature real teams and players... 2020 Super Baseball, Extra Innings, (Super) Baseball Simulator 1.000, Base Wars, etc. When I was a kid I always liked realism in my sports games... but now that I barely pay attention to sports IRL, these old, fictional games reign supreme. |

I get why sports games exist, I don't get why most of them have the shittiest control schemes. It only got worse after the NES' life cycle... except for NBA Jam, I was shocked that turned out easy to control but still presented a fair challenge. |

In terms of playing games this current year, aside from Uncharted 4, I've spent the most time with MLB The Show 16. Then followed up by EA Sports UFC 2. |

Yeah, NBA Jam is the quintessential arcade sports game that almost everyone can enjoy. But then again, Edsel hates Tecmo Super Bowl... so... |
