Which is everything.

This being a NES board, obviously a little out of place but what do you guys think of the Genesis? While the NES was a fundamental part of my childhood, the Genesis was too - from playing launch titles at a friend's house to finally getting one of my own to getting a Sega CD for no good goddamn reason.

I actually ended up getting, and even kept after the purge, a full Genesis set. Just some really nice titles and nice spread of games (even if it's sports heavy). I won't talk about specific games right now but three classes of games I like:

Launch Titles: Good ole' black box with white lines. Tons of nice arcade ports and sequels. This was a nice time since, without the SNES, the developers didn't have to try hard to match the color palette and you didn't end up with games with the drab look of MK1 (of course, MK1 on the Genesis > SNES MK1).

EA Non-Sports Titles: Oh man, how much time did I spend with Might & Magic and King's Bounty. Having not been a big PC games kid when these first hit the scene, I first got them on the Genesis and they were so much fun. EA really peaked here. Even dumb shit like Skitchin' was super fun.

Renovation Titles: So many good games that were Genesis exclusive in the US. Tons of shooters too.

How about you: what you Genesis?

Genesis was the system we got for Christmas 91 so I have the second most fond memories of it. It is definitely technically inferior to SNES but a lot of times the games were just better. The first MK of course is a perfect example.

The Sonic games were great. Sega's version of Jurassic Park was superior. When Capcom and Konami finally joined in (and it took a hell of a long time IIRC) we got good ports/versions of Street Fighter II, Punisher, Contra Hard Corps and Castlevania Bloodlines.

Speaking of Punisher, Genesis was THE go-to comic book game system. Hands down. Spider-Man Vs. the Kingpin, X-Men, and Wolverine: Adamantium Rage were all awesome platformers. Captain America and the Avengers' best home port was on the Genesis (although all home versions kind of mangled the arcade original in one way or another).

Genesis got a bunch of Capcom arcade ports that SNES didn't, like Strider, Forgotten Worlds, and Mercs. And the system had plenty of good shooters, like the Thunder Force series, Gaiares, Air Buster, M.U.S.H.A., and others.

It was light in the RPG department, but Phantasy Star 2, 3, and especially 4 were excellent. Shining in the Darkness is good from what I hear.

I didn't get a Genesis until right after it's life cycle had ended. I don't really regret it since there are only a handful of games that I liked, most of which were first party games. The Sonic Genesis collection on PS3 is probably the most played game I have on the system, if only for having all four Phantasy Star games and Gain Ground.

Keep in mind, I'm not really a huge sports fan and preferred fighting games and RPGs over anything else, so I was pretty much Team SNES, kind of. I don't really do console wars, but I tend to only stick with one system per life cycle, and try to pick up other systems after their lifespan.

Add in the Genesis version of Aladdin. While the SNES version (and the NES version) are good, the Genesis one was a step up.

Contra Hard Corps and Bloodlines were better than their SNES counterparts imo. I mean, all four games are A+ but there was just something about the Genesis ones that felt better.

Btw, prices on Genesis are on the rise but nowhere near as bad as Nintendo systems. You can still get a majority of titles for reasonable prices. If you don't mind loose carts, it's a still a good time for just about anything but Crusader of Centy and MUSHA.

I should also mention that bootlegs and repros are dirt cheap because they're so easy to make on Genesis.

I can actually make any game anybody here wants if you provide me a donor and a couple bucks for the EPROM.

while not about a comic itself, did you ever play that game Comix Zone? I guess it was originally re-released to other systems, but it was a helluva fun Genesis exclusive.

then again its been a few years since I played it, so maybe it's just rose tinted glasses.

Comix Zone was hard as hell.... but a fun, unique game. I still play it from time to time on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection on the PS3.

I had both the Genesis and SNES growing up... and I played them about equally. Nowadays I don't play many Genesis games... Crusader of Centy, Shadowrun, and the Streets of Rage trilogy are mostly what see play. I'm also a huge fan of Shining Force 2, though I don't often have the patience to stick with it for long.

I prefer Bloodlines a lot more too. More challenge, two different character (giving more replay value) and more interesting story and setting.

Aladdin for NES (the licensed version) sucks though.

Contra Hard Corps quickly became my fav Contra once I started playing it, usurping Alien Wars on the SNES, no question.

I would play the hell out of BUSTER'S TREASURE HUNT on my uncle's Genesis. Now that's a game.

All the Tiny Toons console games were good. Maybe not Cartoon Workshop, but they were all solid titles. I doubt that would be the case if Konami didn't snag the license, but hey, they did so they are solid.

Sega Genesis and Master System was my childhood console until we got an N64, and then shortly after Game Cube (because I had taken a paper route by then and so I could buy my own consoles and games)

I still regard most of the games on Sega to be much better than it's Snes counterpart, even though the Snes was capable of more.

My favorites are the Phantasy star series, Shining Force series, Wonder Boy, and Gauntlet 4. Which has some rad music.

Speaking of the music I think the Sega Genesis still beats the Snes in best tracks over all, to me music on Genesis sounded better but it was harder to make a good sound track for most studios which explains why there is so many games with the same bass pitch gonkbagonk music.

Really though I could really write a whole essay on why I think Sega is still better than Nintendo, even though I'm biased a bit however I have my objective reasons for believing so. I think the wrong side lost in the 90 for sure
