When the right group worked on the Genesis they really made use of the raw power behind the system. It's easy to forget it was over twice as fast as the SNES because of the audio and color limitations. So yeah the SNES had dedicated effects like mode 7 scaling/rotation but the Genesis was imo, much more flexible in what it could accomplish. Look at the inverted mirroring in the crystal caves of Rocket Knight Adventures or the sway-flexing of that giant robot in the first level of Hard Corps. No coincidence that both were put out by Konami in their prime.
