I finally gave this some time and I wasn't too impressed. Impressed that it's a homebrew production, yes, but it feels like a Super Metroid hack. The controls are not that great, which is a big knock because it makes the game artificially more difficult than it is. I agree it's pretty easy, which makes sense as the GB version should be this easy if it was made right the first time. |

That is my one and only other complaint besides the difficulty, and it's my biggest. Playing it with the NES30 Pro, and I'm FORCED to use the analog stick, which really doesn't work for a Metroid game since the slightest degree up will cause Samus to run with her cannon diagonally up at an angle. Really wish I could map the damn directional keys, and it's not like it will ever get a patch to fix it. Every other button can be remapped, except movement. Even with that, I'll play this over the original Metroid 2. Kind of mad that it was a GameBoy exclusive instead of just an NES game with more bells and whistles. |

At the time it made a lot of sense, it definitely encouraged people to purchase Gameboys. I want to say I remember it being a must-have game for a lot of kids, and it certainly was the reason I got one. Prior to Metroid 2 you had Tetris and then a lot of dinky garbage that wasn't that great, maybe a few watered down ports of NES games. The complexity of game design and graphics overall seemed to open up once Return of Samus came out. It hasn't aged that well, but Gunpei Yokoi helped make it! Metroid was his baby. And he came up with the Gameboy itself, I really can't think of a more poetic pairing in the context of Nintendo games and hardware. |

I finished this today. I got used to the controls so I managed to address my biggest nag. The game is definitely Super Metroid hacky than anything (especially adding the High Speed Boots and the Gravity Suit) which was disappointing but I enjoyed it in the end. I did die a couple times, but they were just due to carelessness which the lower difficulty allowed. If you liked Super Metroid (lol), then you'll like this. |
