Cut right to the chase. Post your top 3. OPTIONAL: explain why.

1. Super Metroid
2. Doom(2)
3. Zelda: A Link to the Past

1. Super Metroid is just one of those games that I think was the pinnacle of game design to be honest. Took the old Metroid concepts and just amped them up to 100 with a bunch of new features/concepts. It also used the terrain, items and even enemies to tell the story more than 1000 lines of dialog and cutscenes ever could. I've always felt this game was more of an experience that everyone should give a shot at least once. Pains me to see what the series has become(WHY WASN'T THERE EVER A 3RD PERSON METROID?!).

2. I've put more hours into Doom(2) than any other game ever made. Why? Moddability. This is the most modded game ever made by far and it is absolutely insane what you are able to do now with the Doom engine. I'm also guilty of having a pretty modestly successful RTS mod for the engine that continues to be updated so Doom is also guilty for making me familiar with the world of C++ programming... albeit a bastardized version. Even the vanilla gameplay has a sense of replay factors cause of new secrets, strategies and time trials along with an excellent multiplayer campaign that even pioneered deathmatching.

3. I think LTTP is the pinnacle of the Zelda series. This is what Zelda is to me perfected and honestly I think what they should have kept the franchise as. Great graphics, solid gameplay, large open world multidimensional that lacks confusion, secrets galore, and a ton of items that keep things interesting. The game itself is fairly straightforward, but I've always had the impression that this is kind of game that they envisioned the first Zelda game as had the resources been available. Never have an issue of coming back to this title years later and enjoying the experience again and again.

Chrono Trigger
Sesame Street 123
Leisure Suit Larry 3

Chrono Trigger has a great story. It's deep, moving, and I love it. I don't give a shit about most other games stories but this one I love. It's just really awesome. I love the way you battle in it. It's just a game that means a lot to me because I would rent it all the time and it helped me through some tough times. just playing the thing. The music is fucking beautiful in this game and there isnt a bad track at all. The graphics are superb and all the sprites are done beautiful. PLUS THE DRAGON BALL Z MAN WAS INVOLVED.

The other two games I won't bother explaining because YOU already know why they are beautiful pieces of video gaming.

Yeah, I can't do it. I find myself in the weird paradox of Game X > Game Y > Game Z but Game Z > Game X but still not as good as Game Y. I don't really have a favorite game. Ufouria/Hebereke's sort of my "banner game" because it hardly has so much as even a small cult following and Sunsoft should have really did more than just use the IP for shitty spinoff games, but I've probably replayed Final Fantasy Tactics more times than that one. It'd be a mess coming up with a top 3, or 5, or even 100.

1. Dragon Warrior III (NES)
2. Final Fantasy II (SNES)
3. Mordor: Depths of Dejenol (PC)

Two JRPGs and a dungeon crawler. Dragon Warrior III for story and character building, Final Fantasy II for story, Mordor for character building. I knows what I likes and I likes my grinders.

I dunno about top 3, but I will bring up my all-time favorite game.

Spacestation 13 (PC) - A completely fucking insane space station crew simulator on the world's most awful, laggy engine. The amount of agency given to players is incredible. I have never laughed so hard at a vidya game. It's really hard to convey what it's like, but the best I can come up with is "sealab 2021: the game".

In the game, you're a crew member aboard a 2D, tile-based space station, filling any number of roles ranging from extremely important (Captain, Head of Security, Research Director) to absolutely useless (Clown, Assistant, Janitor, Bartender), trying to survive and keep the station afloat. All of your efforts always inevitably end in disaster, with a typical round lasting somewhere between 30min and 2hrs, ending with the station either exploding or the crew evacuating via escape shuttle.

The background lore is that the station is run by a soulless corporation, Nanotrasen, that is working to mine, research, and export a super valuable space-age material called "plasma". Thematically, it's a mix of horror and humor.

The game typically has 30-60 people onboard per round, with some of those randomly selected to fulfill antagonist roles. The antagonists range from changelings that will suck your brains out, traitors working for a syndicate that wants to blow up the station, a cult worshiping cthulu-esque old ones, space wizards whose goals are not fully fathomable by mortal minds, etc.

The game is the result of a decade of spaghetti code, but the station is fully (con/de)structable with fairly complex electrical, piping, and atmospheric systems. During a round, there's a serious effort involved in keeping the station afloat with power and oxygen. Especially considering that random members of the crew have secret objectives to actively work against that goal.

It's one of those games where you either spend 2 hours being bored, the first 15 minutes trying to accomplish something before being slain by an antagonist and saltily crying to a game moderator about it, or some of the most hilarious shit in your life.

The servers range from extremely roleplay heavy to no roleplaying at all. The one I play on typically is somewhere between.

My most recent memorable round, for example, went something like this:

I was a medical doctor, meaning that I can heal people, resuscitate dead people, perform surgery, etc. A guy walked in, demanding that I remove all of his limbs so he can finally become beautiful. After making him a quadruple amputee, he took off all of his clothes and started sliding around on the floor. In the meanwhile, a chemist managed to synthesize meth and celebrated by feeding the poor man-slug tons of meth pills. The effect of meth in the game is that you move REALLY FAST, so here's this limbless ginger with an afro sliding across the floor at mach 1 screaming absurdities and farting on people. Oh, he also found a cape to tie to his neck, becoming some kind of handicap superman.

Then the station blew up.

It's a fun game, you should try it if you can get over the awfulness of a 2D tile-based engine with lots of lag. As NES players, this will be a significant graphical upgrade from your usual games.

WET NOSE
Here's mine. Which will seem wackadoo considering this is a NES site:

1. Marvel vs Capcom 2 (Arcade/DC): I have probably sunk over $1,000 in quarters into the arcade version and several hundred hours into the DC version. It's the ultimate 2D fighter. Broken? Yes. But by some miracle, this mish-mash of characters works. You have no idea how heartbroken I was when they released 3, that godawful piece of shit.

2. Metal Gear Solid 5 (PS4): Yeah, it came out only a year ago, but it is so masterfully executed. I can pick this one up for a quick mission and spend a few hours just goofing around. So much fun. And the hilarious thing is I am so anti-DLC (for many reasons, probably a new thread), but I would buy ALL THE DLC for this game... and they made literally zero. The only knock on the game is the story is unfinished, but that's all Konami's fault.

3. Juno First (Arcade): A fast, fun shooter from the early 80's. Fairly obscure but I love it. Somewhat unique for its time. I basically ruined a 60-in-1 cab by having a 8 way stick (when most games NEED a 4 way) just so I can have a makeshift Juno First cab in my basement.

Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo is pretty awesome - at least when watching friends of mine play against each other and they both know what they're doing.

Watching them match up and hit combo after combo, back and forth - man, tennis ain't got nothin' on Puzzle Fighter. B)

Man, three's tough. There are just SO MANY GAMES, UNF.

But if somebody put a gun to my head with orders to sell everything I own (except three games) to greedy, mouthbreathing, cheeto-fingered NintendoAge members, well...

1. Final Fantasy II (SNES)
2. Super Mario RPG
3. UGH I CAN'T DO IT.

NOPE.

NOPE JUST CAN'T.

BYE.

Extremely difficult limiting this to 3. And it's hard to disassociate "games I'm currently fond of" from "all-time personal best" for me. But I'll try:

3. Final Fantasy Legend/Makai-Toshi SaGa
2. Bionic Commando/Top Secret: Hitler no Fukkatsu
1. Ultimate DOOM (Original DOS version 1.9)

Yeah, this is rough. But, I think I can do it...

#3: Persona 4 Golden

Yeah, it just came out a few years ago, and it's an updated remake of a game... but it's also the best JRPG I've played in over a decade. I've always been a sucker for the Persona games (and Atlus's localizations in general -- let's just not talk about how they bastardized the original Persona the first time around), and this fixed some of the roughness that was on an almost-perfect game.

And the music. Oh my, the music. One of my favorite soundtracks to anything ever... I listen to the damn thing constantly. The voice acting is amazingly well done as well. CAN'T WAIT FOR PERSONA 5 OMGZ

The bad thing? It's on the Vita. But meh, I like playing old PS1 games on the thing so it's not too much of a detriment.

#2: Pirates! Gold

Never played the original much, but this version ate up so much of my time (and my friends') when I was a kid. At the time I first played this (1993-ish I wanna say?), the amount of open-endedness was staggering. You can literally do anything: be a trader (BORING), fight for your country (I CLAIM THIS LAND FOR SPAIN), kill everyone (YES), try to marry the hot girl with the cat (SEX0R)... I could go on and on and on. It's possible to go through the game without firing a shot from your cannon, relying entirely on your fencing skills to conquer and pillage.

The best Genesis game ever, hands down.

#1: Chrono Trigger

Sometimes I look back and think that I think too highly of Chrono Trigger... then I fire it up and end up beating it (multiple times, usually) within a few days of marathon playing. Yes, it's on the easy side... but it's so easy to pick up and play and get enjoyment out of. This was Square at their peak before the shift to 3D knocked them down for awhile. It looks, sounds, and plays better than anything I've ever played. Ever.

Too tough to pick.

maybe a variation of Kingdom Hearts, Red Dead Redemption and TSB? or maybe even throw Skyrim or Resident Evil 4 in there instead of one of the others..
who knows?
