has Nintendo seen the writing on the wall?

so I saw recently that Nintendo is pushing a Mario game for the iPhone. The game seems like it's a pretty shit newgrounds-tier endless runner, but this appears to be a change of heart for Nintendo, who of course traditionally only produced first party games for their own hardware.

What do you guys think? Does Nintendo see the writing on the wall with regards to handhelds? Certainly Gameboy/DS (lol 'third pillar') has been their cash cow for years, but smart phones have thoroughly fucked that up for them.

What does this say for a Nintendo console post-NX?

all major game companies are moving towards cell phone game development so it's not really surprising

There is just too much money to be made on mobile. Not that Nintendo is hurting for cash, but it's basically Wii money for doing even less than they did with the Wii.

Game doesn't look fun, but I haven't played a "runner" game that I've liked yet. I guess kudos to Nintendo for seeing mobile for the cash cow it really is. Maybe this means they'll blow their gimmick load on mobile devices rather than trying anything stupid with the NX. Though I doubt it.

I wish they would just bow out a la sega and just make deluxe editions of their older games, port them to as many things possible and stop focusing on shitty gimmick consoles and handhelds and just make games. I have zero interest in motion control, 3-d, touch pads or waggle.

Yeah, I wasn't a fan of motion controls, which is why I never hopped on the Wii hype train. The PS Move and Kinect were even worse. But if the rumor is true about NX being more of a portable with the option to connect to a big screen, I'm fine with that. Nintendo's strength is portables anyway.

This.

I have a Wii U, but I only bought it for Mario Maker, the new Zelda (when it comes out) and the Virtual Console.

Nintendo is already printing money, but if they stop trying to make consoles (I don't mind their handheld devices) and do exactly what Matthew said; re-make their library and release them on the consoles that are successful $$$$$$$$$$
