Yeah I agree about the memes thing, the problem with that is the same problem with social media though.

Remember back then those were all just inside jokes between their little communities and not the internet at large except for REALLY popular stuff, which just kind of got there because one guy in one little community brought up something he liked in another little community. Because everything was still a niche at large, but because we have sites like reddit, know your meme, lolcats.etc and even now imageboards are more mainstream we have people trying to compete with each other to make memes.

Basically creating a meme is the lowest common denominator for any sort of social achievement because any stupid faggot can post a funny picture and signal to others he's in on the joke, even though most memes are still niche and take awhile to float up mainstream there is still a good amount that are forced.

What is worst is that memes are now being used as a pop culture, if you play any new timey video games you'll know exactly what I mean, it's in Pokemon, Fire Emblem, border lands, to name a few; in fact I'd say almost all nintendo games these days that have dialogue have reference to memes because the translators that work at nintendo's tree house division are a bunch of droopy eyed faggot hipsters who think it's cool to shove internet culture into everything because they just can't do a decent translation.

so the reality is, it's not the memes themselves but the people that spouse them that are the problem.

Reddit sucks. There are a selection of subs that have good information, but they are drug down by the endless ebb and flow of repeated question after question. It's worse than on a forum like this, because not only do you have people who won't do a simple search, now you have the actual site fighting them as relevant topics fall into a pit. The short attention span theater nature of reddit generally keeps any good content fleeting. And yes, good content does exist on reddit, but you're at the mercy of a instant feedback/attention whore userbase who will downvote words on a page and upvote a stupid meme.

As Damien said, karma and upvotes were a terrible decision to add. Why add something of use when you can make a pointless joke? It's like stand up comedy - you got your Bill Hicks occasionally and your Gallaghers smashing fruit the rest of the time. It's not a good place for discussion either, both for the aforementioned vanishing topic problem and the general attitude of the userbase, also as Damien said.

I was on the gamecollecting sub for a decent stretch and got tired of it for all of these reasons. The sub has devolved into an endless finds thread, but with the added bonus of people whoring for points. So if they overpaid like a motherfucker for something, they don't care and proudly make a post for attention and points. I kept finding myself answering the same questions and it was truly amazing how wrong some users could be, in the face of facts, and insist that they're right. And holy shit, do they get testy when they are called out on shit they just made up.

Reddit boasts that it's the front page of the Internet. Have you ever looked at reddit's frontpage? It's total garbage. That kind of is where we're coming from in this thread.

I'd just like to mention that slashdot's anonymous moderator system worked much better than UPBOATS.

Didn't you have to start paying to post on IMDB? Because that would kill it.

screw you.

those forums were fun at times.

even the worst part of the old internet is better than the new internet of social media and people yelling politics at each other.

I'm a bit late (1 month) discovering Danihel's post but my thoughts are that I largely agree, internet speeds were not fast then and the site designs were ugly and ad-cluttered, and pop-ups were indeed a scourge not yet mitigated by blockers. I think his thesis falls apart, however, when he suggests that it's *just* nostalgia. As if nostalgia is a renegade brain mechanism for elevating pure shit. That's not what nostalgia is. Nostalgia is a vehicle for continuing to enjoy good things that existed in humbler times. If there wasn't something positive about the original experience, there'd be no nostalgia for it. I don't ever remember my grandparents being "nostalgic" about the great depression. They certainly told us grandkids about it, but it wasn't with rose-colored glasses and fondness. It was generally a way of ensuring we knew how lucky we were to be living in a world that wasn't beset with constant struggle. They were NOT nostalgic.

We were right then about recognizing the good in a dead console, and we're right now about recognizing the good in a dead form of expression. The things we're nostalgic for CO-EXIST with the things that sucked. Some of those sucky things are comical to look back at, so they add a certain silly charm to our remembrances. In other words, we can simultaneously hold two thoughts in our heads: remembering what we loved about the old scene, and also remembering the limitations that now seem very quaint. I don't think it's necessary to trash the entire experience just b/c there were drawbacks.

The thing I love about them old days was the creative spirit, that as many others already pointed out, has found itself hobbled by the popular cookie-cutter platforms that dominate the internet experience now. Reddit sucks, it's impossible to generate interesting content without catering to masses of shallow morons. Same goes for nearly every other platform - I despise Facebook, Instagram, all the typical low-effort haunts. "Hey LOOK! I reposted someone else's image+caption... Like me, I'm unoriginal yet in touch with the popular psyche." Whatever. 4-chan is particularly shitty, since it encourages anonymity, as if handles weren't anonymous enough. Anything geared towards "Likes" with an algorithm that suppresses unpopular, niche content is not for me. I'm weird and my tastes are similarly weird.

Here's what was cool about the old scene and personal websites:
-We had our own personal platform for generating odd yet memorable content. We didn't have to worry about it being artificially buried by attention-seeking drivel. As long as the reader was sufficiently interested, they had full control over what they saw. We could move new and interesting shit to the front page, and didn't have to worry about being censored by moderators or the soft-censorship of popular opinion. (note: censorship isn't quite the right term here, just can't think of a more appropriate one).
-Between dedicated Link sites, our own links pages, webrings, and forums, we had a means of notifying others of our existence and promoting our content. In fact, it was preferable that we were a niche audience, because we knew we had a built-in base, however small. But it took some level of cooperation, comradery, and obsessiveness.
-We had the opportunity to get to know each other relatively well, through forum interaction and other low-bandwidth communications (emails, guestbooks, chat).

Grain of salt:
-When we complain about these things no longer existing, we're criticizing our own lack of dedication and consistency. As long as we have a non-temporary stomping ground, engage with each other, and commit to generating content, we can have the object of our current nostalgia back.

Also, I think Norm McDonald is hilarious, he's dry as all fuck. And Big Bang Theory is shit, it's Chuck Lorre CBS pablum garbage, Two and a Half Men peppered with science and gaming references.
