@Edsel yeah but my Defender cabinet is a broken down husk and mess. The only value it has now is some dipshit rolled Robotron on it. I do want a haircut, but girlfriend likes it long so I can't win there. @Brat yep, rolled it at 100 million. One thing though is you can only have 255 lives before the 8 bit integer rolls over to zero lives and you start over at nothing. I made sure to hit around 250 and take breaks when I did to start the process over again from around 175-200 depending when/how long I took a break for. I will say this that the update from 2015 (Robotron was officially updated 2 years ago. Isn't that crazy?) was crucial in making the run. The new features were a lives counter and the 8th digit in your score being unblocked out. I think they did that for Stargate and left it in Robotron cause it was the same hardware so it was an oversight? I don't know how I would have done this run without either of these features to be honest. @shain all right, let's see here. I mentioned it a few times on the forum, but I saw this contest back in October and decided to give Robotron a real shot after dismissing it years ago. I'm admittedly a Smash TV fanboy and kept reading about it so I decided to try it again and I was hooked. Since then I made it a goal to win this contest which I was successful at. The allure of a world title belt was way too much for my simple mind to pass up. I've never marathoned anything before and it honestly wasn't that bad. I think it helps that Robotron is an adrenaline soaked experience all the way through. Hell, I didn't even take more than a drink of the Rockstar I opened and was energized enough to last nearly 24 hours. I definitely know what to expect for any other marathons and how to prepare for them now. Here's the lowdown with what happened: I started playing on July 4th at 3pm and stopped on July 5th at 1:50ish. I scored 105 million which is a big deal for a few reasons. I'm now the third person ever to have a verified 100 million score and I have the second highest score ever recorded for it. WR is 180 million which I think I can break if I were to do this again and I do plan on it in September because I've lost control of my life. I chose this week because I have it off so why not kill myself during vacation time? Highlights include: -Neck pain, forearm pain, thumb pain, and pinky pain. The forearm pain disappeared around 50 million in (10 hours), but the rest stayed with me. The biggest reason I stopped was cause my right arm was starting to act up and my pinky was so numb I actually bit it and didn't feel it. Thankfully it seems to be a blister and no real damage was done. Next time I'm scheduling breaks and stretching every single time... even if it's nothing more than a mere bathroom break. Taping up my thumbs and pinky should fix the blistering too. -That being said, physically I feel fine believe it or not. Aside from the blisters, my shoulders/neck/biceps/forearms feel like I hit the gym the day before. Not in any severe pain at all. Just a bit of brain fog from lack of sleep. -Hardware failure. I think around 12 hours in my stupid monitor started randomly zapping and dropping the image. That definitely didn't help my anxiety of reaching the 100 million. -Supplement taking. I must have popped like 2200mg of Ibuprofen within the first 15 hours. After that I didn't even bother. I honestly don't even think it did anything for me. The Cordyceps mushrooms, Lions Mane mushrooms, and coconut oil probably kept me going the most. Every 3 hours I took more and more. -Larry DeMar popped in at around 82 million and stayed to the end. Kinda surreal to have one of the lead programmers watching you play his 35 year old game cheering you on. I think that covers it really. I can answer any questions you guys would have if you want. Overall I must admit it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be. I actually still enjoy the game even after all that if you can believe it. It also was pretty rad that you scene guys dropped in. I definitely appreciated the support and it was amusing seeing guys like claw go crazy in the chat box confusing most everyone else watching. |

So when you said you were doing this, I was like 'That's cool'. Then I started googling to see what the record was, etc and it oddly looked like what you were doing was done by a short list of folks. My first thought was '... nah, it's probably a popular thing to do, I mean let's be honest, the most notable thing to come out of NESFoturms.XYZ is Claw commiting to do something and not doing it or only doing it once and never doing it again. But then when you hit 100 million, it was kind of "This is a thing, isn't it?". That's crazy that you are one of three to do it. And you're verified so it wasn't just for shits too. I, uh, also promise not to shitpost on your chat comments next time. I figured 'lol nesfoturms' and was a jerk, but had I known one of the 2084 coders were going to show up, then, uh, best behavior. Well done. I can't imagine playing something like that for that long on one sitting. |

Okay, I must have mistaken a five for an eight when I thought I saw 280ish lives. Man if you beat the 180 mil record I would be so proud of you, not lying. But also I would question your sanity for staying up to do that. I haven't really played seriously in a while but I have always loved Robotron. My best scores have been a more modest 8 to 13/14 mil. I should pick your brain sometime for tips on how to play. You mentioned that if you stretched more that probably would have helped, I'd agree, but I wonder are you allowed to wear things like gloves, elbow braces, a back brace, etc? IMO something like racing gloves or anything with wrist support would help a lot. We wear socks (good ones, not flimsy stuff) to avoid chafing and blistering our feet, that should equally apply to the use of our hands in such a repetitive stress situation. |

Sorry I kept putting off this reply. I've been a lazy pile these past few days. @port Dude that claw compilation. Holy shit. I nominate it as post of the year. Well done. Don't even sweat it. I honestly was amused by you doing that especially at the beginning. I was an unknown player going into this so I don't even think anyone really tuned in until I got to about 20 million so it worked out fine. The only other thing of note I've done related to the game before the marathon was winning a mini 35th anniversary competition on the Williams Players Facebook group using the Twin Galaxies Tournament Settings. Definitely a noteworthy achievement, but nothing to set me apart from anyone else. I had no idea Larry would pop in, but man I was honored that he did. I guess next time people will watch from the beginning as they now know I'm serious about it. It would be cool to hear from you guys from time to time when I try this again in a few months. That aforementioned group was also mega supportive and encouraging of me to keep playing beyond the 100 million including the current WR holder. He's definitely a class act and a gentleman all the way. I'm nowhere near as good as he is so it was pretty rad that he came in to convince me to keep playing beyond the 100m gauntlet. I also want to again reiterate that I've never marathoned a game this long before, but lasting 20+ hours wasn't that bad just because of how chaotic and random everything is. It didn't really get boring, but I will admit that it definitely was monotonous when I'd look at my score and think "JESUS CHRIST WHY AM I AT X0 (X being any number) MILLION STILL HURRY THE FUCK UP." I couldn't imagine playing a game consisting of repeating patterns for that long. No thanks. @brat I actually do want to write a bit of a hint guide of how to play and more advanced techniques I used since the guidebook website doesn't go too much into it. Whenever I get to it maybe you could check it out and provide some feedback. There also is a custom version of MAME that fixes the timing issues the current one has for Williams games which I'll link for testing in the eventual topic I make for this project. I know Robotron in particular is a lot closer to the actual hardware with this version and a lot easier when it comes to firing/spawning speed of Tanks/Enforcers. I don't know about Twin Galaxies rules, but the main group I'd be playing this for have no problem with anything like that. I know another guy who's attempted the marathon used wrist braces without anyone batting an eye so I should be fine in using whatever I'd need to survive. I think some finger tape and doing neck stretches every 50-100 waves should be good enough to survive the long haul. @cal Thank you Matt. It was actually pretty fun to do and I can't wait to try it again. @edsel Yeah I've been seeing someone for 2 years now. I can't believe it either. |

I don't know why the What If thread is up in ports compilation. I never intended to talk about every issue or anything. |
