BIG BUTT BABY

We ended up with a N64 at some point when I was a teenager, but I don't know how we got it. I sure as fuck didn't want it. I remember renting one from the local video store with Mario and Pilotwings when it came out and having a good time with Pilotwings but having a fuck of a hard time controlling Mario with an analog stick. I actually had problems using analog sticks for years, up until the PS3 came out... and I still occasionally have issues. But anyway... We had a blast with it that weekend, I remember. Pilotwings was so much fun, just flying around and doing random shit after you completed some stages was a riot to us at the time. I remember we'd do the hang gliding stages and try to fly through the flames that were on top of an oil rig thing (maybe? it's been awhile, but there were flames somewhere) and trying to take a picture of it with the in-game photo thing at the moment that we charred ourselves. I kinda thought the way Mario was set up was weird... having different goals within the same level to get stars, and all that. And again, I had trouble running straight so I fell off stages and platforms a lot (especially the first Bowser level when we got there). I have no depth perception IRL and in 3D games sometimes it gets pretty taxing for me to figure out what's where and whether I can walk or jump certain places without falling or whatever, and Mario 64 was the first game to really give me major issues. Star Fox on the SNES was another one, but that had you on rails for the most part so it was doable for me. But I digress. After that, the trickle of games was slooooowwwwwwww. Like, we only had 5 or 6 games at the video store seemingly months after release, and they weren't really anything I wanted to play. The next games I really remember enjoying were Goldeneye and Smash Bros., and I only really liked Goldeneye because it was fun on a big TV with a group of friends. Even now I don't really care for many of the games on the system. I got Ocarina of Time on the VC because I missed it as a kid and I gotta say, I just don't care for it. I also picked up Paper Mario on a whim when I saw it was up on the VC and I've played through it a few times and enjoyed it, but that's hardly an indicator of what the system was capable of. My sister ended up with the system in her bedroom because I absolutely did not want it in mine, and she used to rent like Army Men games and shit like that, I never thought they were fun. I still enjoy a random game of the original Smash Bros., though. |

One thing I never liked about so many 3D platformers for the N64 was that it seemed they were collect-a-thons where you had to COLLECT everything. I liked it better on the SNES where you could collect that stuff if you wanted too but didn't have too. I remember getting a N64 for christmas when I was maybe 11 or 12... waiting for hours for my cousin to come over to hook it up (I have no idea why no one else in the house could do it) and after playing it for 30 minutes, maybe an hour. I just unhooked it and hooked up my SNES again. And this was after months of hype. I remember liking some weird games like SNOWBOARD KIDS and all that. I did play a lot of Goldeneye, Smash Brothers, and Mario Party and still have fond memories of those games... I would rather play Super Mario Kart over Mario Kart 64. Mario 64 was weird in the fact half the stars were fun to get and the other half made me go 'fuck this'. I remember playing Zelda OoT when it finally came out... playing the first three dungeons and then just giving up. I just don't find that game fun. I never played Majoras Mask. probably never will. also yeah Castlevania 64 was TERRIBLE. I also checked the N64 games list on Wikipedia and so many of them I just never played and nothing about them even seemed interesting. I've probably played every stupid NES game at least for 10 minutes. Thank you for wasting time reading this mess of random thoughts about the N64. It just wasn't that great of a system. Or maybe for the most part gaming just went in a different direction that I just didn't really like, because I haven't played many games past the N64. |

You make a good point in that most of the games weren't just uninteresting but they were actually very bad, which for a Nintendo console is crazy. Hell, NES had tons of shit games but also awesome ones to balance it out. I also checked that Wikipedia and at least during the consoles life (96-01) I only played seven games. My best friend at the time had it only for goldeneye and nearly everyone else my age just referred to the whole console as "Bond" look at that first year. Four games. Dreamcast had 11 on launch day alone. |

Oh shit, I remember someone I knew renting that fucking CastleVania game, and I thought it was absolute shit. The most baffling part is it got a sequel. WHY? No wonder Iga disowned those games when the PS2 CastleVanias came out... not that those were masterpieces to begin with but I digress, at least those were playable. |

I'm just imagining a kid who played through symphony of the night two years earlier going "oh shit, a new castlevania AND it's going to be in 3-D!!" Then spending the summer mowing lawns while picking the deer ticks off his legs and after a bout of Lyme disease and a trip to the ER he finally has the 69.99 for the game. After his pace hastens to the register at toys r us, he excitedly reads the instruction book while smiling ear to ear in the back seat of his step-mom's Taurus. While stopped at a red light he hears a car beep, and looks up to find a toothless man in a ratty pickup truck glaring down at him and pointing at the castlevania box. "Nah, couldn't be," he thinks as his step-mom Pulls the Taurus into their shared driveway. As little Jimmy inserts the game and confusedly tries to maneuver around a low polygon skeleton on a motorcycle he stops to think about life. "Am I even living?" He asks. He turns to his step-mom but she is gone. Was she ever there? Jimmy sheds a single tear as he puts on a Beatles LP and logs into his computer. He searches for a NES channel and pauses as he is prompted to enter a user name. He looks around at his blood stained walls, the copy of castlevania on the ground, and thinks of the single, lowest, saddest word to describe what his life has become. He clicks into the channel and registers the name Sappy. |

Well you did make a thread asking about something similar to this a while ago, but it wasn't the exact same question. You asked specifically why we (the NES scene) hated the N64... which... is pretty much what this thread has turned into... so you're definitely not wrong in pointing that out. Here's the other thread just for the sake of reference. |

Yeah but your thread doesn't have the Sappy origin story, so what's the point? |
