I'm borrowing portnoyd's spare 3DS and rebuilding a collection while waiting for the 2DS XL to come out. I decided to re-buy a bunch of old regular DS games I had. I forgot how good some of these games are. FF3 is a great port of the NES game, even though giving the 4 orphans a backstory is corny Square-Enix/George Lucas revisionism. Chrono Trigger is a great straightforward SNES port. I love New SMB as well, it's the first Mario game I played in a while that felt like a "true" Mario game. One great game I love that not many people might know about is a strategy game called Panzer Tactics. It's a very in-depth boardgame type war game, with three campaigns set in World War II. You start as the Nazis invading Poland, progress to the USSR during Germany's invasion of Russia, then finish with the Allies invading Berlin. Anyone know any other lesser known vanilla DS titles that are good? |

I am a retard when it comes to DS (as opposed to other times) and I like to think I have pretty much every DS game worth getting. I will say I hated the FF3 port (as well as the FF4 port) because they insist on using 3D graphics, which look like ass on the DS as well as slow the games dramatically down. So here's my must have list: Trioncube: Best puzzle game on the DS. And the DS has a fuck ton of great puzzle games. Honeycomb Beat: Another puzzle game, this time by Hudson (and I think not the ghost of Hudson, aka Konami). This and Trioncube I take anywhere I go with a DS type system. Adventure Time Hey Ice King Why'd You Steal Our Garbage: Killer Zelda II clone. Really well done. AVOID THE SECOND ONE AT ALL COSTS. (The third one only released on 3DS is good too) Zoo Keeper: It's basically Bejeweled but better. Should be dirt ass cheap too. Polarium: Decent first party puzzle title. Also get cheap. Picross DS/3D: Also a first party puzzle title(s) but pretty damn fun. Gets hard but highly recommended. Color Cross is a third party made title, but not as well made. Meteos/Meteos Disney: Yet another first party puzzle title(s). Notable in that you hold the DS book style to play. Pac Pix: An early "lol hey look, touchscreen" game but it's actually really fun. Avoid Pac N Roll, very frustrating and not well executed. Feel the Magic/Rub Rabbits: Sega's entry into the aforementioned category. Very DESU NE KAWAII but still fun. Both should be 'give it away' cheap fwiw. Ghost Trick: I have yet to actually play this one (I will... eventually), but Adrienne LOVED it. It's an action puzzley type game where you jump into objects and people in a room to figure out a puzzle. Giana Sisters DS: This is getting up there in price, but Giana Sisters were the answer to Mario on the C64 (I think) So they made a new game for the DS and it's really fun to play. Moon: Killer FPS title. I Heart Geeks: Stupid name aside, it's The Incredible Machine. See also: Mechanic Master 1/2 & Logic Machines, literally the same thing. Scribblenauts: I honestly don't really care for this series, but if you can get the game DIRT CHEAP, it's an interesting footnote title. The concept is cool but I felt it burned out quickly. YMMV Super Princess Peach: A must have title. I enjoyed it more than New SMB. Thor: Great side scrolling game. Wayforward flipped a coin and this game turned out really good (as opposed to stuff like Alien Colonial Marines, which was really bad). Short though. Hotel Dusk Room 215: I couldn't into it, but Adrienne did and loved it so much that she imported the sequel Last Window Cape West (which she liked a lot less than the first fwiw) Space Invaders Extreme 1/2/Revolution: Awesome ports. They added a lot to make it pretty damn cool. Touch Detective 1&2-1/2: Stop me if you heard this one before, but Adrienne loved these as well. Scourge: Hive: Would you like some Metroid without Metroid? This is a pretty good one, I wish I eventually finished it... never did sadly. Professor Layton Series: Do you like logic puzzles? Because this is 4 games worth of logic puzzles. Adrienne also loves these, I didn't care for it that much. Retro Game Challenge: Game Center CX The Game. Basically, a whole bunch of "in the vein of NES games" games in one package. Sadly, it's one of the more expensive DS titles. Ninjatown: Good but hard tower defense title. Monster Tale: Pretty fun side scrolling adventure game. Soul Bubbles: Bratwurst worked on it. So get it, lol. Nanostray/Nanostray 2: Decent but not super wow shooters. Ivy the Kiwi: Fast paced action puzzle title. I got this for Xmas one year and couldn't put it down. Dragon Quest Monsters: Rocket Slime: Super fun wacky JP action puzzlish title. The following list is a bunch of interesting titles that I picked up but have yet to play. They may be terrible but they have promise. Again Commando Steel Horizon Cop: Recruit Miami Law Flower Moon Sun Dementium Dementium 2 Kuropoto Lux-Pain Magical Starsign Metal Slug 7 Nine Hours, Nine Days, Nine People Phantasy Star 0 Ontarabonta Pucca Powerup Puchi Puchi Virus The Dark Spire Tank Beat Time Hollow Theresia Windy X Wendham Infinite Space (Try and get a new copy of this if it looks interesting. Once you play the game the first time it is impossible to reset it to factory) I also have more titles to recommend but these are my top picks. |

I mostly played the well known stuff on the DS. Contra IV, Phoenix Wright, the Dragon Quest games etc. They're all good though! Going to second Retro Game Challenge. It's really tremendous and does a great job of capturing the feel of that era (flipping through magazines, arguing with your buddy etc). There's a fan translation for the sequel that I recommend tracking down as well. Tetris DS is really solid and has a neat NES theme. I think the biggest disappointment for me on the DS was Zelda Spirit Tracks, which is probably one of the most boring games I've ever played. I'm also not enamored with the Mario & Luigi RPG games. I love Super Mario RPG, I love the first couple Paper Marios, but the M&L games just don't click with me at all. The characters never shut up for starters. The Final Fantasy IV port is an acquired taste. I think it looks nice but they really cranked the difficulty up. I grinded my characters up to level 70 or 80. and I still couldn't beat the final boss. I way prefer the additions in the GBA port. |

I told this to Damien but both Zeldas on the DS are total garbage. Nearly unplayable. I agree on Mario & Luigi. The first one on GBA was great! A fun time and that's where it should have stopped but instead they made 3 fucking sequels. I may have finished Partners in Time but I barely started Inside Story and I didn't even buy Paper Jam or whatever. Enough, Nintendo. If you want the definitive FF4 port, you have to get the PSP version. It's perfect. |

I'll have to pick up a couple of these. Already wanted Princess Peach, but I think I used to own Space Invaders Extreme and I definitely want Giana Sisters. I played the C64 version WAY back in like 3rd grade in our C64 computer lab.

I was such a huge GBA fan I never warmed up to the DS. I know I missed a ton of games but through emu I enjoyed Tetris DS and castlevania dawn of sorrow - except for that terrible boss pattern you were required to draw with the stylus to fully beat a boss. |

Since everyone else is mentioning 'big name' games, I'd gotta give a recommendation for Contra 4. They did an excellent job of balancing what was good about Contra, Super C, and Contra III and mashing it into one great game. Another plus is you can unlock Contra and Super C much like how Metroid Zero Mission had the original NES version as a bonus feature. Sadly Contra 4 seems to be more expensive than most run of the mill DS games. Tecmo Bowl Kickoff is pretty good if you liked any of the TSB games. They only go for like $5-$8 so it wouldn't break the bank to own it. My favorite new feature is you actually can add stat points to players which is a necessary feature that TSB seriously lacked. I know you could do it in 3, but that game just wasn't the same as the original few. Aside from this, the only other DS game I own is Chrono Trigger. I suck at knowing lesser known titles |

if you have a hacked Nintendo DS or plan on hacking yours, the Chibi-Robo DS game is incredibly underrated and has an English patch. elite beat agents is one of the greatest rhythm games ever made, full stop. Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland is a descent into madness that you'll regret not throwing yourself into. It's gimmicky in the best way. Trauma Center is super over the top but really good. Second game is better, the first game can get impossible. Of the games mentioned I back Phoenix Wright, Retro Game Challenge and Contra 4 hard. Also big fan of Feel The Magic: XY/XX. It's one of the few really solid minigame collections with insane music and really great visuals. |

I remember Meteos and Lumines on the PSP being two majorly good early puzzle games that never got proper releases onto other consoles. |

I had this with my original DS collection. I caved and spent $30 on a CIB copy because I did remember it being very good, although it's hard as fuck. I'd have broken the 3DS a couple times already if it didn't belong to port. |

I know the feeling. I actually beat it 10 years ago and was quite pleased. I powered it up a month ago to check it out again because I hadn't really played it since and my save is completely erased. I tried playing it and realized I needed to relearn the game and wasn't making it beyond the first few stages. I had to stop myself from chucking the DS at a wall. Great game though! |

I tried to get into the Nintendo DS (a Lite) a while back and just couldn't tolerate the small display. My eyes are pretty bad, currently typing this on a 32-inch LCD about two feet from my face. Having seen my cousin's 3DS XLwhatever it didn't seem that much bigger to me. One day I might get one when they're about the size of a laptop from the late 1990s. |
