RetroPie; AKA GIVING UP

I ordered and received a Retropie kit last week. This was mainly brought on by today's ridiculous game prices killing my urge to collect. I finally no longer have the urge to even consider paying hundreds of dollars for something like Little Samson or Pocky and Rocky 2.

The Retropie is pretty cool, still playing with the settings and trying to find out if there's anyway to eliminate or at least minimize the input lag. It doesn't bother me much when I'm playing games I'm unfamiliar with, but I fired up a Mario game and...woof.

Anyone else have one? Thoughts?

I think input lag was discussed at one point here in a topic about HD NES options, but overall it all depends on the TV you're using. My Vizio for example has a 'game mode' that mostly eliminates any latency that would happen with the normal settings. Once I enabled this I was able to play games on this TV after years of thinking I was horrible at everything thanks to the half second delay.

I do have a Vizio and I made sure to set it to Game mode. I also have a wired USB controller. Seems to vary from game to game on how much I notice it. Tried Contra III today and it worked great. So do most Genesis games. But the Mega Man and Mario games have felt sluggish. I think there are some options in the settings which help minimize the lag, but I'm not really sure where I need to go for those.

playing these games on anything less then an ugly bulky ass tv from 1992 is disgusting.

That's kinda unfortunate. I was doing some reading up on it and asking a few friends of mine who run these for advice so here's what I ultimately got:

A. Depends on the emulator. Some apparently add latency. Try different emus to see if they have different results. This might be the case because it sounds like mostly NES games feel off for you
2. To try a different display driver. Allegedly Dispmanx is said to cut down on latency and recommended to me by a friend who has used this system for a while now
D. Hardware again. If you have another monitor try it out on there to check for latency issues and maybe try another USB controller to rule that out. Some dude said he was using a cheapy controller with latency and switched to a PS3 wired connection that was absolutely perfect

There's likely to be someone way more qualified to answer this that posts here. I also found a Reddit thread talking more about this sort of thing specifically so maybe you can find an answer there. If you can get it working flawlessly let us know because I've been interested in one of these things for a while

Thanks, I'll look into some of those options.

Your mileage might vary but even with the lag I've been very pleased with mine so far. The guy I bought mine from even sent me a link to a bunch of ROM sets which made filling this up very easy (and sort of distracting. I don't think I've played any game on there for more than 5 minutes because there's so much I want to try out).

Most of the games run fine, it's just when I'm playing something that's burnt into my brain and I miss a jump, I chalk it up to the lag and it briefly sours me on the whole thing.

On the other hand, I got Snatcher up and running so I think I'm back on board.

I just set up RetroPie for a friend on one of my spare raspis.

It's pretty damn slick and easy to use.

Switched to Dispmanx for my video driver and that did the trick. The games run with noticeably less lag now.

Only downside is its *slightly* more ugly and it disables all the cool shaders like the ones that make it look like a CRT. Still, I can live with that if the games play better. Plus I could always switch it back for games where reflexes aren't as crucial.

hey man, i know you solved the problem and all that fun stuff but, i had that same issue with libretro or whatever its called that loads the games for say the nes, genesis and other systems and i found that i had the best results with setting the Pi to use 720p instead of super duper 1080i with no enhancements.

i think with what you did was totally different then what i do.

i used my pi on a mini projector and had choppy refresh rates due to the projector not being able to handle said rate. i changed the display settings and haven't had an issue since.

bring up the menu screen by pressing a button and goto video settings i think its option 4 from the menu list that pops up

i have my pi setup to run nes games at 720p and i don't have any lag issues

if its any help my video settings is using CEA-4
you can even try setting it up for 480p which i think is CEA-3
Spoiler: click to toggle

Thanks, I'll try that when I get back from vacation.

Only technical issue I'm having right now is with Snatcher. The audio becomes corrupted, or the game completely freezes up at certain points. I changed the emulator per some advice I saw online and that helped at one point, but the game still freezes up sometimes when it tries to load audio.

@calgone

I'm not sure if you can find a seller that has preloaded games, but adding games is actually really easy. I bought a Retropie Kit from these guys and it came with everything I needed. They even sent a link to an archive.org file that has zip files of several ROMsets. Just download them directly through the PixelOS browser and extract the files into the proper folder, reset your Retropie and boom, they should all be there. Adding individual ROMs is just as easy, just go to site and download them.

If you're not super technically inclined(I'm definitely not), I recommend getting a kit. I bought one of the higher end ones from the sellers that I linked. The only thing I didn't like were the controllers that came with it. They felt fine, sorta cheap but the cords were super short. Per a recommendation, I tracked down a few Hori Pokken controllers that work great and have long cords as well. Any USB controller works though, including wireless ones (the wireless ones will have a bit of lag though).

I've had that issue with SNATCHER as well. but I had absolutely no audio issues whatsoever on my copy I have. most of the time I keep all CD formats in the BIN/CUE fashion and since I have a sega cd I played through the first chapter and I still get garbled graphics at the end of the first chapter but none anywhere else. as far as music goes I don't have any issues with it at all.

I slow burn all my cdrom based games to ensure I have decent compatibility and the freezing you mention isn't present on the actual system itself but using that same image on the pi presents a sudden pause but its only present when making choices and makes the game a little longer the game doesn't freeze completely as sprites are still moving but saving often is key. I almost beat the game but I kept fucking up the final part of the game because i'm just that bad at aiming with a dpad.

The super easy way I load games onto the pi with retropie is I enable network shares for samba, really easy to do since you choose it from the menu explore a little bit, and just load them up through windows.
