Games you'd like to play again for the first time

I constantly think about how much I'd love to erase certain memories of games to experience them for the first time again. If anything I often wonder if my love for said games is nostalgia driven or is it because the game is actually good. Anyway here are a couple to get this topic started:

Super Metroid. Super Metroid is my favorite game ever made and if ever there was a chance to play through it again like it was my first time I'd gladly oblige no matter the cost. I've memorized this entire map and can beat the game in under 40 minutes in game time with 13%-15% item collection rate. I know where 99% of the items are and have to play with an item randomizer to really get into it now unfortunately. I can only appreciate the game for what it is and notice the details of its brilliant construction rather than enjoy the true experience of wonderment it once provided.

Any of the Mega Man games. Knowing what boss does what and where all the items are (especially in the X series) really takes the piss out of what makes these games fun I think. It would be nice to play one of these titles again with an entirely clean slate and have to figure out ways around obstacles or even what weapons do bosses in faster. I guess this falls in line with the X series more than the original, but the same could be said for them on a lesser scale as well.

So yeah, what are some titles you wish you could play again for the first time?

A lot of games I wish I could play again for the first time come with the caveat that it only makes sense in those specific time-frames

The first time I played Super Mario World I was blown out of the fucking water, and that's an experience that would be fun to re-live. But that experience only existed because SMW was pushing the bounds of technology at the time, it was this spectacle of feeling like shit just jumped ahead into the future.

Playing it again for the first time, today, would kind of kill a lot of the feeling attached because videogames have evolved so much further than the limitations of an early SNES cart.

I think the only game that breaks away from that for me that I'd like to replay for the first time regardless of timeframe is TES III: Morrowind

Possibly the NES and SNES Mega Man stuff, but a portion of my enjoyment comes from having mastered a game and knowing what to do. Plus the context of when I first experienced a game no doubt colors what I think of it now, we all have much more critical eyes as adults. edit: Yes Jin is spot on up above

Also, until I got somewhat good at SF2010 it was aggravating and not very fun, the trend of softening penalties and dying in video games over time was not an accident.

All told it's not much of an issue for me because there are often long stretches of time between revisiting an old game I'm familiar with anyway.

My favorite NES games were ones that were sprawling, like Blaster Master or Metroid or Zelda. I'd love to go into these again with no knowledge of where anything is and rediscovering everything. I remember talking with friends about dumb stuff like jumping over the flagpole in SMB or glitching through walls Zelda II and finding hidden areas with power-ups. Of course that was just dumb grade school rumors, but it was always fun thinking about areas you couldn't get to and wondering just what the hell was right past cliffs/barriers.

Even any RPG would be nice with my mind "reset." Any of you bother talking to townspeople in Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior anymore? I can beat those games blindfolded without talking to a single NPC, and it somehow makes them more boring.

Having said that, with age I find myself being annoyed at games that make me spend time figuring them out. For example I'm stuck in Zelda: A Link Between Worlds on 3DS right now because I can't get into the 3rd pendant dungeon and it's just pissing me off to the point where I don't want to touch it again for a while.

Most of the main SNES RPGs.

I didn't play any RPGs until 1996 or so, but I read game magazines from cover to cover, even if I didn't think I was going to play the game. I had the story lines and secrets for games like Final Fantasy III and Chrono Trigger memorized years before I actually played them. I remember my first run of FFIII was actually kinda boring because I just steamrolled everything with Ultima and Vanish+Doom.

where'd that weird grosso/roller derby sig come from?

i'd re-live anything that's instantly un-challenging as soon as you beat it. punch out series and scumm-based games spring to mind.

Oh man, that video is somehow better than the gif and I didn't think that was humanly possible.

Shenmue and I say that without any hesitation. Nothing else comparable except maybe secret of mana in terms of "holy shit this is incredible as art and I never want to stop"
