This is to discuss all things related to the original Doom. Memories, mods, modern source ports etc... I started playing Doom in 1994 and really have never stopped. Every computer I've ever used has had a port of Doom installed on it and it's a game that has infinite replay value in my opinion. If you consider the amount of wads there are online, there's more than a lifetime's worth of replayability without repetition with that resource alone. Remarkable how John Carmack's decision to make everything open sourced has kept life in a game that long should be forgotten about as nothing more than a notch in VG history for its innovations. I've been actively modding Doom (GZDoom/Zandronum/Skulltag specifically... I'll glut this topic up with the BS I've made later) since about 2009 and it's remarkable what you can do with the engine now a days. You seriously could make a AAA title with the engine just because of how robust it has become especially since there's now a port that's 100% clean from copyright and ready for stand alone indie games. The engines capable of 3rd person shooters, true 3D with room over room mapping, platformers, shumps, porting other games to it (some sick bastard actually ported a few Mortal Kombats and DKC games) and so much more. It's really amazing how a dedicated community kept a groundbreaking 2.5d shooter from 24 years ago so relevant in today's market. I know a lot of us have talked about our love of Doom before so let's finally get that topic where we can let it all out properly. |

I remember first seeing Doom running on a display PC at Wal-Mart. It was on one of the later levels and all the monsters had been killed so I just remember wandering around the empty halls and being really impressed with the graphics. I never had a PC that could run the game, but I played the 32X port at a friend's house. It was missing a lot of content and had shitty music but it ran fast and we had a ton of fun with it. The SNES version had better music and more content...but ran like shit. I wouldn't play Doom proper until...2007? I picked up Ultimate Doom for like 5 bucks at Wal-Mart. I went through a breakup soon after and I pretty much spent 2 weeks in a funk not leaving my dorm room and playing Doom 1 and 2. Ah, memories.... Anyway, it's almost shocking how fun the original Doom is nowadays. I never got into all the Doom mods or whatever, but I love the original games so much. There's nothing better than blasting away demons to MIDI ripoffs of metal songs. I feel like this is sacrilege...but I kind of like Doom 1 better than 2. It has better, I dunno...atmosphere? I like how the space stations gradually turn into caverns, which then turn into hellscapes. |

it's my favorite FPS of all time. for some reason, no other game has been able to replicate Doom's speed and arena shooter sensibilities. even Painkiller: Black Edition, which for all intents and purposes is the greatest arena shooter of all time, still doesn't have that Doom magic. Because of the outstanding and dedicated modding community, you can run the game with keyboard and mouse controls and music enhancing wads that provide the greatest combination of modern sensibilities and classic doom feel. |

I had a friend who talked about going to another kid's house and playing Doom on his 386 or 486 PC. My first experience with it was New Years Eve 1994. My cousin and I rented a 32X from the local video store along with Doom and Tempo (which is a pretty fun little platformer, btw). I remember we played on I'm Too Young To Die and still only made it to like the fifth or sixth level. I remember playing it until after midnight and actually getting freaked out by it and turning it off, lol. Not long after that I picked up a 32X for $20 at K-Mart when they were clearing them out, and got Doom and Kolibri for $5 each. I got good enough to beat it on Ultra Violence after playing it on and off for awhile. I remember the first time I beat it I laughed my ass off at it showing a DOS prompt and just freezing. I still don't know why the fuck that happens, but it's hilarious. Years later when we got our first PC at the house (with Windows 98!), it came with Final Doom, I think it was called? Maybe Ultimate Doom? I played it quite a bit and liked it. Never got into mods or multiplayer or any of that... I just liked playing the original game. I know the 32X port is neutered pretty badly, but it's the one I played the most as a kid and so it's the one most near and dear to my heart. |

The greatest FPS of all time. I played the shareware copy endlessly my freshman year of high school until I found a boxed copy of Ultimate Doom for $20. The packaging was beautiful with subtle embossing and the original artwork shadowed in black. Any of you guys remember those bargain bin CD wallets of software? I found one with a '1000 Best Doom Mods' disc and I snapped that up too. The Simpsons, Aliens conversions, bunch of good stuff, and it beat having to download any of it by dialup just to learn if something was crap or not. I still have that disc somewhere... Possibly the best game on the Atari Jaguar, which is kind of a quaint thing to say now, but back in the day, AvP and Doom alone were good reason to envy anyone who had that system back in 1994. |

The original DOOM is my favorite video game on any system, less for the technical achievements (which were impressive at the time) but more for the impact it had on me as a person. We hadn't seen anything like it before. My brother had heard it was good, so we picked up the shareware copy at one of those shareware floppy vendors at the flea market (anyone else remember those?) and tried playing it on our 386SX. Obviously it ran like ass but it still blew us away playing on a credit card sized window with low detail. I bought Ultimate DOOM in 1995 (still have the Egghead Software receipt) before we had a computer that could even run it properly, and my brother got mad that I deleted a bunch of his MS Paint BMP files to free the 20mb of space I needed to install the game. We finally got a Pentium in 1996 or 1997 and could play the game properly. My brother and I have been making levels pretty much since level editing was a thing. His stuff is pretty amazing, being an artist, but he rarely ever releases it because he hates the modding community (Doomworld, etc.). I still have a one-episode replacement I started in 2000 that I never finished (mostly because I lost the original awesome E1M7 I did in a hard drive crash years ago). |

Amazing to see all of us have some sort of a Doom story. Really shows how groundbreaking it was for the home market at the time. Maybe we should all try to play a coop wad or something sometime. edsel: You'll probably not like it so much cause of all the hype behind it, but it's still a great game especially on multiplayer. Bratwurst: I'm as shocked as you are. I'm also shocked at the lack of a smug facial expression. |
