Here are some more Doom anecdotes:

After I had acquired Ultimate Doom I played the hell out of it and would get directions made with pencil and graph paper from a friend of mine in high school to find stuff like the chainsaw and other secrets. This guy used to be a good buddy in elementary school but because of differing class schedules in HS and the fact he lived way out in another town, the only time I got to see him was in the mornings to quickly exchange stuff like MST3K tapes and music CDs.

My favorite unofficial WAD wound up being a simple zoo with every monster you could unleash with their own dedicated button so you could arrange fights.

Because the computer was in the living room I had to endure constant 'jokes' that all of the enemies looked the same and endless questions of why I was killing that guy again when I had already killed him just a little while ago. Anyone who didn't play video games seemed inclined to make this observation!

I only got to play Doom II after my grandfather died and I went up to Canada for the funeral; my uncle there had it on his Macintosh which I thought was super funny because it had already been out for awhile on PC yet it was probably the best thing yet available on the Mac at the time. I thought it was awesome, loved the new monsters and weapons.

Roughly around this time my dad and I had a bit of a side business going where we would buy out computer equipment phased out of corporate offices. Soon everyone at home had a 486 computer, a monitor, keyboard, modem, etc and we started selling computer bundles to any and all willing hillbillies in the isolated rural stretch of societal decline that was Pender County. Our biggest customer base wound up being black families that advertised for us via word of mouth- and inevitably part of the sales pitch/demonstration involved showing off the games. The shareware copy of Doom helped put food on our table for many months.

Oddly, I don't have much in the way of a Doom story. I played it, it was fun even though I was terrible at it, did some odd deathmatching and that was about it.

love Doom/Doom II, like strx10 said it's a game that has near-infinite replayability for me. I got to check out the video game hall of fame at Strong Museum in Rochester, and there was a section for Doom which I thought was pretty badass. My buddy and I play co-op online pretty often, it's one of the only FPS games I like.

I play my Doom games with goofy fucking sounds. It's the only way to play it!

I still have the original Doom wads where it's shitty Simpsons graphics and sprites along with some of the greatest sounds of all time.

Anyone here have the 94' edition of the night owl CD? It had some of the best Doom wads available.

Doom -file harry.wad infimus.wad

Here, have my unfinished Ultimate DOOM episode. Unfortunately you can't play them all at once because I stupidly had patched graphics on the individual WAD files per level instead of in one master IWAD. I always meant to fix this but never did.

E1M1 - Fallout Shelter
E1M2 - Armory
E1M3 - Infested Base
E1M4 - Waste Dump
E1M5 - River of Blood (incomplete)
E1M6 - Fortified Zone
E1M7 - Throne Room (incomplete)
E1M8 - Earth Anomaly
E1M9 - Gloucester Catholic (incomplete, but beatable)

I need to dig around my backups a bit though, I think I have versions of E1M5 and E1M7 that are further along.

^ Looking at the structuring of how you've got your textures, I could probably combine them all in about 5 minutes or less. I'd be willing to do it if you'd like me to. I think that's a limitation of the old wad editing software because it required new textures/patches lumps to be made when in reality they don't need to be (TX_START & TX_END are fine for new textures). Not sure if this applies to vanilla Doom (I don't see why they wouldn't work), but this is definitely the case for sourceports.

I actually know that wad and have used it many times for testing code. You might get a kick out of this mod I made because it's that concept on steroids. Here's some teamplay footage I found of it on YouTube:

[dohtml]<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/mi3IwvtO7yo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>[/dohtml]

Brief synopsis: You can control the main player from 6 Doom engine 'games' and summon monsters against your opponents instead of using weapons like an RTS. You collect mana that regenerates and the last person standing wins. There is actual strategy to this and this video looks like a spamfest just because there are 6 players going at it.

I see Chex Quest monsters so you are correct.

I appreciate that but having dug these up I kinda want to tinker with them again. I also have a master WAD somewhere with the appropriate intro screen and menu graphics changed, as well as some homemade MIDIs. At least I hope I still have the MIDI stuff, I don't even remember how I sequenced them originally.

If you need the midis ripped from the wad I think I can still use wintex to at least generate a midi file
Same with sfx as well. Last time I tried wintex on Windows 10 it just refused to do anything but I have "legacy" machines for that.

Just for the sake of it, here are the two main modern tools most people use to edit Doom these days. They also edit and work with Vanilla Doom so there's no conflict of interest in case you want any projects to run on Doom/2.exe.

SLADE does everything WinTex can do plus a whole lot more. It's still being updated too. This is the main all in one tool for Doom editing these days and can even edit maps if need be.

GZDoom Builder is THE top of the heap map maker as well. Both of these tools have a very low learning curve and are very versatile in what they can accomplish. There's no reason to use stuff like WinTex, SlumpEd, XWE etc... anymore except for nostalgia purposes.

Funnily enough, I bought some Doom collection when I was 19 from Wal-Mart. My dad was with me and they asked him if he wanted me to play such a violent game. He said "I don't care, he's an adult"

They laughed and carded me and were shocked when I was over 17. Whee.

Ok, real talk.

My actual first memory of doom was in 2005 when I saw walmart had this on sale.

I bought it, and I remember I had to show someone my ID to buy it.

Then, I took it home. It was pretty nifty. I played the first episode of Doom from start to finish without cheats. After episode 1, though, it all went to shit.

I still have that CD somewhere.

How is that even possible? Didn't that retail version also come with doom95?

my first experience with computer games period was playing Doom I/II, Jazz Jackrabbit, and Commander Keen at my uncle's place with my cousin.

Uncle was sort of a handyman around town, I guess. Repairs for electronics, lawnmowers, etc you name it. He had kind of a garage-turned-workshop attached to his house with probably 6-10 PCs of late 80s / early 90s vintage, plus all sorts of random stuff that would probably be an absolute goldmine to me now. Seeing a 286-era machine without case, splayed out and components mounted to a wooden board was very formative for a young shain.

That was always the best part of visiting my Dad's family - Doom was probably directly responsible for me begging for a PC for Christmas.
