I started out on ICQ and AIM was kind of a revelation after using ICQ for a year or so... messages that didn't disappear after you replied to them? WTF?

Like everyone and their mother had AIM. It was what you used to know what your friends were up to instead of calling them or whatever... you just checked their away messages. What a time to be alive.

Probably my favorite AIM memory is when my cousin (who is a year younger than I am) was staying over on a Friday night and left his AIM up on my computer when he went upstairs to the bathroom. I saw he had a message from a girl asking if we wanted to come to a party. I pretended I was him and said yes, pick us up at the Giant (grocery store mostly in PA) in town (which was right across the street from my house). My cousin couldn't believe I wanted to go get wasted (I guess since I was a quiet kid it meant that I never did anything "bad," hah). Ended up going to a party and meeting some dudes who were a few years older than I was, drinking Mike's Hard Lemonade and playing card games. My cousin got pissed because no girls would fuck him, I drank and played cards all night. Got home the next day before lunch time and was hungover as fuck. Pretty sure my parents knew but said nothing about it, haha.

Other than that it was just fun to use to prank people with fake accounts and what not. I remember giving my sister's AIM handle to a bunch of folks in #nes_chat and her going ballistic on me because she was getting lewd messages constantly.

Also I remember I gave Claw the AIM name of a member of the band Lillix (all girl 4-piece band that were kind of a thing in the mid-aughts) and he said some pretty vulgar shit to her. LaceyLeeLillix was her handle. Fuck I remember too much dumb shit.

I could probably prattle on for eons about AIM. Sucks that it's gone... I think they still use ICQ in Russia, though. (I say this because I searched for my old ICQ number on Google a few years ago and found a message board that was in Russian that had people talking about my RBI Baseball FAQ, of all things. What the fuck.)

I remember my sister had to use my computer for something and that FLYINGMINDSPRING bothered her for days. I should search my tripod account for that, I'm pretty sure its still there.

I used it to mainly to unsuccessfully hit on girls in my class as I was far too shy to actually call them and ask them out.

I did this once in college. It was miserable and embarassing in retrospect.

also AIM ruled. I finally made the cutover to XMPP about 7-8 years ago. I just run my own server and my friends put up with it for some strange reason.

Honestly I don't remember much besides away messages and sending music to each other.

Just remembered that it was thanks to me giving my sister's screen name to a bunch of dudes that we got the glorious MP3 that was "Bill Murray Calls FM's Sister"

Andrew (from NES Times, not NESHQ) used a Bill Murray soundboard and somehow kept my sister on the phone for like three or four minutes, and hilarity ensued. I wish that I still had that file dammit.

I used AIM for years until every last one of my friends quit using it. It's also where I met a number of you for the first time so this is definitely a hefty loss. Just another loss from the days of youth I guess. This reminds me, time to post in another thread...
