Long story short I've been amassing genesis games on the cheap. To reiterate, I've invested very little and gotten lucky from a few tag sales and trades through my local game shop lately. So here I am entertaining the idea of going for it.... I have ~200 games, the vast majority common and 90% being loose.

I don't know...I don't want to get in the habit of checking Craigslist and eBay every day but I also feel given 2-3 more years I can do this. To people who have done it, is it worth it ?

I have a full boxed US set and it was incredibly easy and cheap, but I also did it 14 years ago. This doesn't help you.

However, if you are going loose, it's not THAT bad, especially considering the prices of everything Nintendo.

Is it worth it? Yeah. The Genesis library is notably more diverse than the SNES library. Really with SNES, after the god tier type titles, the quality of the SNES's library falls off a cliff, but not so much Genesis.

Here are some tips. If you are out and about, remembering these can at least help you pick up the right titles if you can't get them all.

1. Anything worth a damn on Genesis for the most part is a good game or popular. There are very few incidences of dumb collector influence and a game like Trampoline Terror is worth what it should be, which is dick. But the Splatterhouses are lol expensive.

2. The optimal price for 99% of the sports titles on Genesis is free. I'm not kidding. The exceptions are really the Mutant League games, Madden Champ Edition and NHL 98 (which is bizarrely hard to come by for some reason).

3. Get the Renovation titles sooner than later. Pretty much the largest growth in prices as idiots shit their pants more and more over them.

4. Don't worry about the Blockbuster cart and Outback Joey. No one concerns themselves with the NWC and the Racermate cart for NES, same deal here.

5. If you are going loose, flip boxes and manuals to fund more cart purchases. I am still missing 50 manuals and let me tell you, eBay sellers are not afraid to list the dumbest manual for lol prices. BUT YUO CAN TOO!

That's about it.

I've always been a SNES guy - I think the highs on the system are a bit higher but you're dead on here. I've been exploring the Genesis library on my Retropie and I've been blown away by the shooters and action games. As much as I love the NES, I think I've always been more interested 16-bit era.

This might be a dumb comparison but I feel like the SNES is better at "experiences" - games like Super Metroid, Yoshi's Island and Chrono Trigger are era defining and are destined for all time lists.

However, the Genesis really excels at playing a fucking video game. I mean, Shinobi 3 might not make a whole lot of top 100 lists but you play it and think "Now THAT's a fucking video game."

Also, those plastic Genesis game cases look awesome, way better than the cardboard SNES boxes. Shame about the cheapo manuals though....

Mini update: 185 games. I feel like I've snatched up all of the sub -15 dollar games. At this point just trying not to hit a wall with the more expensive and harder to find stuff. Definitely not going for complete.

I hate to say it but I think my best recourse now is to just buy a game or two a week from eBay as it's almost garunteed a waste of time to look in the wild and Craigslist has dried up.

To this point, I need a Vapor Trail manual.

I will never even pay half this much. Renovation games, man. For those who want a taste of SNES idiocy on the Genesis.

This bums me out. I'll keep an eye out though

Edit: you may be better off buying it complete and then selling your copy with the box to recoup the loss.

I'd love to have everything complete but I don't think that's realistically possible in these times anymore

the fact you have a collection in your sparkly clean house where nothing is kept for more than a week is amazing.

but seriously have there been any 'hidden gems' that you've found out by just playing these games cal????

to your first point, I know...Trust me, if I didn't luck into a deal that found me with around 60 games for less than a dollar a game initially I probably wouldn't have thought twice about going down this path. It's still daunting and I'm not sure I will make it to the end but I AM GOING TO TRY MY HARDEST.

Way, way easier than NES collecting though, so I have that going for me.

For the hidden gems, huge yes. Whip rush, crackdown, Saturday night slam masters and fatal labyrinth - which is quickly becoming my favorite game. It's so addictive.

I've always been a huge sega fanboy, but doing this deep dive has been a lot of fun. Even if a game isn't "great" by my standards, trying it out and adding it to the collection is a fun project, and its affordable too.

You're right, I really should buy complete and resell but putting out the money, especially with current prices... but I can't do it. I just can't support these idiotic prices and I want to be frugal, damnit.

I only have a full boxed set because I collected every box at the same time I got the games. I owe the guys from my local Funco a lot because they fed me easily 200 free boxes as they got Genesis trades and were instructed to pitch the box and manual. And then there was the game store chain in Georgia that I absolutely sodomized for another 250 boxes for dirt ass cheap. Good times.

I've been doing the same with Famicom (which is also mostly really cheap, even imported from Japan*) and even playing the crap has been super enjoyable. Just stay cheap and patient and you'll get to where you want to be.

* This seller is basically a go-to for cheap Famicom titles with dirt cheap shipping. I have bought a LOT of games from him:

What's the proper nomenclature for stepping out from a meeting to make sure you win your auction for a loose copy of Liberty or Death.
