So I'm sure everyone's heard that they are closing all the Toys R Us stores. This bums me out because I know I'll never be able to take my son there. I was really into toys as a kid, but past age 9 or so I was strictly about video games. I would spend my entire time in their massive game aisle looking at all those plastic game displays. Does anyone remember the Game Boy demo units they had? It basically blew up the image of a GB game to normal TV screen size, but it predated the Super Game Boy by a few years. It was the only place I ever remember seeing them. The only ever in-store TG-16 demo units were are TRU as well. Trips to TRU were a rare treat because the nearest one was a few towns over. I never got games much, but I could usually talk my mom into letting me get a magazine. Occasionally I could get something that was really marked down, like Section Z (cool) or Dino-Riki (ehhhh) |

I don't remember going to my local Toys R Us that much... It was like a real special day for us to go there. Even though it was right next to the mall which we went too a lot. Still I remember getting the NIGHTMARE board game there. Remember that? The gatekeeper was a fucking asshole. I also remember seeing one of those smaller PSOnes there. I thought they looked weird. That's all for me and Toys R Us... |

I fell in love with the TG16 at a demo station in Toys R Us, but I couldn't buy one at the time. I mostly remember even in the 90s that prices were kind of steep, the only things I ever walked out of the store with were pseudo-toys like the TMNT Pizza Power board game and a package of Spinjas. |

Our closest TRU was in Harrisburg, which is an hour or so drive from here. We rarely went that far to do any kind of shopping as a family (especially when they opened a mall 30 minutes away), so I don't really remember much about the store. I do remember skipping school and going to Harrisburg with some friends and going in and being like "holy shit, everything is overpriced here." When I was really little I remember we went to a department store called Hill's, and that's where I got my toys/video games. Oddly enough in State College the plaza it was in is still called the Hills Plaza even though Hills has been gone for decades. |

As a bunch of you know I worked for TRU for just around two years in college. No hyperbole, some of the best times of my life there. I try to separate that from my actual childhood experiences which were magical. Getting a new bike every summer, video games with the ticket system, nerf guns etc. It really is hard to contextualize to young people just how rad it was to have a Walmart-sized store filled with toys before the internet was a thing. Great memories. I thought about writing some down this week or even podcasting about some job memories. We’ll see. |
