For the most part, I think nostalgia is fine. Initially I would think that the reason a lot of people are into dwelling on the past is not being happy with their current life. Speaking personally though, I have a pretty good life. I'm happily married, with a kid and a great job and enjoy a level of stability that a lot of people my age don't have. So I'm not sure why I'm always looking backwards. I guess there is always a certain appeal to thinking about the days where my biggest concern was if there would be a new Nintendo Power in the mailbox when I got back from school.

I think the reason nostalgia obsession seems to be everywhere nowadays is partly how the internet and social media tends to amplify stuff like this. Stuff that plays on your fond memories, like film reboots all the way to those terrible pop culture t-shirt mashups are discussed and shared ad nauseum online. Every generation is nostalgic for things - it's just more visible now.

If anything, the thing that really bugs me about nostalgia is the industry that builds up around it. I see nostalgia as a personal thing and I get sorta annoyed when I see attempts to re-sell my memories to me. When you get down to it, I don't think people miss Ducktales as much as they miss being 8 years old.

Follow up question - is your nostalgia on a sliding timeline? Years ago I used to be only nostalgic for my childhood, which was a pretty idyllic one. As time went on I found myself looking back fondly on my (terrible) middle school years. Now, if I'm nostalgic for anything, it's my college days (all the freedoms of an adult, none of the responsbilities).

Percy that was really well put. I completely agree.

In response to the sliding-scale, yes. Personally, I feel like I got a lot of my childhood reminiscing out and don’t feel the need to revisit too much based on exactly what you said: it’s being memed and sold to us. I just don’t care and don’t want to drag my kids through it. What I’ve been experiencing lately is a real nostalgia for my carefree late teens/early 20s. Specifically just being able to go on road trips with a days notice, drive to another state for a concert and not have to worry about a work meeting in the morning. Not having everything scheduled out so much.

I’m actually taking steps to break out of a rut....and it’s not that I’m not happy. Love my life, just miss the spontaneous quality it used to have.
